Little Harbor Yachts

Little Harbor Yachts (LHY) has a long history and is recognized as one of America's iconic brands of world cruising sailing yachts. LHY was founded by legendary yachtsman Ted Hood in 1959. Hood, first known for his racing prowess then as a sailmaker, now ventured into yacht design and building. Over the years LHY designs were built in a number of different yards around the world but the bulk of the production which is still sailing today was built in Taiwan.

Due to escalating building cost in the 1970's LHY chose to move their production and partnered with Lien Hwa, a large industrial corporation in Taiwan with manufacturing in Kaohsiung. Very quickly Hood recognized that due to the semi-custom nature of the builds, LHY needed greater control over production and invested in his own facility at the northern end of the island. Here with complete autonomy they were able to control material specs and labor, and produce what are still considered today some of the most elegant and well built yachts ever produced in Taiwan.

Hood was an advocate of heavy displacement, centerboard boats because of their sea kindly nature in heavy weather. Displacement to length ratios of these designs were typically over 300. So while they lack acceleration in light air they are surprisingly good performers in a breeze and exceedingly comfortable in severe conditions.

During this period most world cruising sailing yachts were built with solid glass hulls and wood cored decks. LHY chose to build core-composite boats using Airex foam for the hulls and Divinicell foam in the decks. This was done to improve sound and thermal insulation more than to reduce weight as the fiberglass skin thickness is still very substantial.

The materials used were all industry standard and again departed from the norm of Taiwan builders. From gelcoats and fiberglass fabrics to hardware fittings, systems and sails, LHY never cut corners with their production. These yachts were all handbuilt with an enormous number of man-hours due to their incredibly detailed custom interior furniture. All the interiors where stick-built to customer specifications. Solid woods, raised panels, mortise and tenon joinery and teardrop louvers. There is nothing modular about these builds.

While the brand is now retired it is estimated that there are over 200 of these yachts still in use. Historically the complete range of LHY builds is from 37'-100'. The majority of yachts you will find on the market today where built between 1980 and 1995 and range from 38'-63'.

You will not find yachts built to these specifications and with this level of detail in today's market, it is just cost prohibitive in this size range. For those looking for a sophistocated world cruising sailing yacht, Little Harbor Yachts are well worth the investment. These yachts were built to last and typically have been well cared for by their owner's and can be purchased for a fraction of the cost to recreate today.
